Bamacross had it’s second 2012 race at East Lake Park on Sunday and it was a roadie’s wet dream with all the flats to attack on with one ass-nasty sandpit and a series of turns going up and down a damn dam in the backside. The headwinds quickly would turn to tailwinds giving you that moment to surge and fire down the straights.
Edit: Photo galleries at the bottom of this post
This race brought on some much needed nutrients on the race with Zach Davis and Will Stabler shoving bacon down the mouths of anaerobically decimated racers as well as the beer fairy handing out some warm beer and cheap insults.
Bamacross Chix Rippin It
The race crowd was bigger with around 22 girls racing this time as well as more barriers being bunny hopped (always a treat to see). The sandpit was absolute hell being an instant endo for some who dared to ride it.
Bici Coop sported their newly designed jerseys at Bamacross with some of them…being…a…skin suit (what has been seen can never been un-seen now!). The Bici gang also dominated in the tent design having tons of meat, cupcakes, meat-food and a mythical meat-bacon-date-walnut treat made my Langston Stabler. Holy hell, it was like finding the Grail!
The mountain bikers of BUMP came in full force showing that just because they sport the fat tire doesn’t mean they can’t compete! David Passmore, Gretchen McElveen, Jan Ardovino and Holly Carmichael all came and gave that course a hammering with suspension and 2.3 knobby tires!
Maaike Everts once again dominated the gals again putting a gap between her new competition, Jen Nichols. But that gap keeps getting smaller and smaller. Watch out Maaike!
I think it was cool to see all the people who were there just to go to the park that day and came upon us. The few I spoke with seemed really interested and entertained by the idea, and enjoyed the spectacle! – Anna Carrigan
Bamacross Winners
In the masters (35 year olds) Scott Staubach, Jacob Tubbs and Eddie Freyer took first, second and third. The Category 3, first,
second and third places were scooped up by John Newsom, Jacob Tubbs and Jamie Alexander. The non-human Cat 1-2 were taken by cyborgs, Willy Fyfe, Kevin Conerly and Omar Fraser. In the Singlespeed division, Pat Casey and Randy Kerr took in first and second. Pat also took second in Category four tailing first by Darrell O’Quinn. Hill Balliet took first in the huge span of juniors this time.
We had many surprised spectators this time due to the location and park. All seemed to enjoy the pain across us racers’ faces as we lapped around the track for the windy but beautiful day.
Kate Cleveland as well as other great photographers were out there shooting us racers. Since I’m biased, I’m only showing Kate’s photos here but if you’re on facebook, check out the BAMACROSS group to see great photos done by other photogs.

My wife, took the bulk of these Bamacross photos (I took some). She wanted to focus more on candids and some shots with an artistic bent which tell a story of how the day went. I think they are fantastic, check’em out!
