Bamacross is a magical race season for folks who have the hep-cat southern drawl all you yankees go nuts for (for those of you who only know me by the internets, I’ve got a prim and proper southern accent…don’t hate!).  Bamacross is Alabama’s version of cyclocross… it’s just that we add in bacon, beer, fairies and sheep.

bamacross

Okay, we don’t really add in sheep.  That’s bad and brings up all sorts of negative connotations, but from sheep comes wool and from wool comes socks and socks keep my feet warm during the winter months of which I absolutely hate.

I’m off subject… and I have ADD, let me reel it back in

A Bamacross Illustration

Clicking the image should pop it up to a biggie sized view

From my blog here at Driven2Divide.com, you’d think all I do is bike.  Well, it’s true, I do a fair amount of biking but my real job is that I am a three things:

  • An adjunct professor at the University of Alabama in Birmingham teaching photoshop, illustrator and interactive design
  • A freelance graphic designer and illustrator (some of my clients are Coca Cola, the Wall Street Journal, Gillette, Snapple)
  • An artist that hangs and shows work locally and regionally

Okay so that’s not a real job, but it’s a real fun job!  I love to draw and I love to draw things I’m interested in while telling a story.  So why not tell a story of Bamacross, right? RIGHT!

This piece, of which I’ve not titled yet, is my very odd take on Bamacross.  I’ve got a long ways to go but I’ve taken some friends of mine and exaggerated them into more of a representation of their teams (we have a fair amount of teams who compete in Bamacross).  I’ve added some sample screen grabs of it’s progress so far with a few closeups so you can see the detail.

So watchya gonna do with this Bamacross illustration?

Well, finish it for starters.  Then I may give a framed piece away to the overall winner of this year’s Bamacross season (I need to finish it first!).  I plan to at least represent all teams in there and add a lot more to the very bizarre storyline (yes, I know they are all on Penny Farthings…but when you ride Bamacross, that’s how you roll, yo).

Pics or it didn’t happen!

Here you go, my progress on the Bamacross pic so far.

Sometimes the Dutch make an appearance to Bamacross CX events and also very, very tall Zemunites.

Rumor has it Creedance Clearwater Revival will compete again this year – complete with silky smooth legs.  The fatties from BICI Coop will be there too.

This silverback has got some Momentum!

The crowd goes wild! The dog goes full retard!   – never go full retard…

That’s it, more later as I continue on this project.  I’ll also have race write ups on Driven2Divide and after Bamacross season will be back to the long arduous training for the TourDivide.  During this transition from the TNGA to Bamacross to the TourDivide my posts might (like may…like a teensy bit) be slightly sporadic until I can get back into a system.  While I try to run this blog like a place of reviews, personal stories and race reports – I’m one guy (well, okay I have my awesome editor and the occasional guest blogger) so it gets a little hair to put out a worthy read.

Oh hey, you wanna grab one of these images and use it on your FB and/or the Twitters?  Feel free to – just give me some dawgnabbed credit, mmm kay?  Also, if you’re local here in the ‘Ham, come out to our first Bamacross game this Sunday at Tannehill Statepark!

I'm an graphic designer who loves biking no matter if it's road, cross or mountain biking. I love it all. I live in Birmingham, Alabama and design t-shirts, work for companies like the Wall Street Journal and teach as an associate professor at two of the local Universities.
